Both men had an exceptional reputation for justice and fairness, which won them much respect from many of their contemporaries. Sertorius and eumenes both recognized that justice and being perceived as a trustworthy and honourable person is all the more important in times of civil strife or power struggles. Both men had powerful foes who spread disinformation about them, and this threatened their legacies. And further, the one met his death when he had no anticipation of it, the other when he was expecting the end.
