The Tension Between the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister
The involvement of party members is an innovation or if not an aberration from the Westminster system, Joshua says. It creates a tension there between who commands the confidence of the lower house of the parliament and who gets to choose that person in the party membership. The Australian equivalents were introduced by Prime Minister Rudd and then Prime Minister Morrison as a way of making midnight leadership spills harder for parties. We saw in 2010 an Australia that happened in a matter of what, 12 hours or so in Julia Gillard replaced Kevin Rudd - it was a dangerous business.
