John, chapter 19 begins with a sort of mark coro nation. Pilot seems to have hoped that a public humiliation of jesus before the crowd would satisfy their murderous desire and give them some sort of catharsis. The purpose of this was probably more to bring about a public shaming than to cause the most extreme pain. Although the soldiers are performing a marked coronation, jesus really is being prepared for glorification at the cross. Once again, we are reminded that this is the day of preparation. Jesus is the passover lamb.
