#116: Are Cities Bad for Mental Health? (ft. Andrew J. Steir)
It's Not Just In Your Head
Introduction
This week we're joined by Andrew J. Steer, PhD student in UChicago's Environmental Neuroscience Lab. He is the author of a psych article, Why Life Is Faster, But Depression Is Lower in Bigger Cities. The bigger the city is, the less likely people were to be depressed he says. People just have so many more interactions in big cities, whether it's on the subway or with a barista and you're doing in your daily life that at least the data are telling us that those are positive interactions. We can't have a profit through the mental health care system if we want our people to be connected and healthy.
