The Politics of Popularity
I think it is a question of elitism but not quite how we generally think of it as. You could say that there's a popularity which is politically manufactured. In our times there's popularity via social media. So we have influencers constantly telling us what to like and what not to like. But I do think that there is something which we might call genuine popularity. And what I think is happening is that elites are not really allowing for genuine popularity with books. For example people just love it so much that they start to spread it via word of mouth. There's so much interest from the ruling classes and the upper levels of society that just don't allow for that because so much money
