Masturbation involves this abusive imagination in erotic matters, which I think is bad in itself. In Japan, there's a diagnosed condition that the media call, Sakuci-Shinai Shokugan - or celibacy syndrome. The question isn't whether masturbating is sinful but what happens to my spiritual formation when I'm doing it? And thinking through that lens, it changes our understanding of the issue.
