The Achilles heel of vertical scaling, absolutely. It's up to you to make sure you've got two of them up in order to be able to seamlessly switch. Some parts of your architecture will scale way more linear than others. Your classic one is web traffic. Well, I don't see this scale on linear scaling for me.
