The home movie feels kind of nihilistic. The narrator, the quality or the characteristic that seems most to capture what the dude is about is a kind of laziness. He says he might be the laziest man in Los Angeles. Because LA is so full of lazy people, he might very well be the most lazy human being in the world. So you're right that it focuses on his nihilism.
