Larry Walters took off from Long Beach, California in a 100-foot controlled tethered float above a residential neighborhood. The Inspiration 1 was rising at a rate of up to 1,000 feet per minute. Larry reached a peak altitude of 16,000 feet, more than 3 miles high. His mother thought maybe I was possessed by the devil or perhaps post-theanomed stress syndrome," he told George Plimpton.
