The Ideal of a Christian Intellectual
A christian intellectual is some one who not only contemplates the truth, but who also hands the truth on to others through the active work of teaching. The ideal for saint thomas is a contemplative life that's so full that it overflows in teaching. And so he says famously, just as it is better to illuminate than merely to shine, so it isBetter to hand on to others what is contemplated than merely to contemplate.
