The Principle of Double Effect
The principle of double effect has a long tradition within the Catholic moral tradition. The idea is there's an action, an individual, performs an act and it has at least two, potentially more than two, effects. It can't be an intrinsically immoral action such as direct abortion or euthanasia. There must be some adequate or proportionate reason to permit or tolerate that bad effect which the agent does foresee.
