He sees it as partly a way of comportment that a man who is practising bushito r i should correct myself. Not everyone lives up to the standar, but ideally ats something that one doesn't need to be too self conscious about. He puts his duties, whether it's to his lord or his responsibility to be benevolent to those who are weaker than he is before his own selfish desires. But pride is a funny concept, because if you're too proud, that can be counter productive and kind of narcisistic.
