How to Store Pointer Increments in a Plugin
There's a point of tension there because one possible answer is it should be stored somehow. But on the flip side, if you store everything transiently locally, then you have no ability to leave this part of the code in this state so that the next person who comes along sees what I'm seeing. It's actually quite important they do that. So I don't think there's a one size fits all answer there, but it's also definitely you're right. It's not a trivial problem to solve.
