The Importance of Outward Appearance

Leviticus 21: No one who has a blemish shall draw near a man blind or lame. In verse 5 they shall not make bald patches on their heads. I've heard it suggested that perhaps this was something that the idolators did and so the Israelites were told not to basically mimic the fashions or the customs of the idolators.
