Every attempt to make a utopian society invariably causes the collapse of imperfect human social systems into war, famine, and mass murder. An estimated 130 million people were killed by fascism and communism in the 20th century. We often accuse the most intelligent of being detached from reality, but the truth is they are the people most connected to reality. And we fear the reminder they give us of how contingent, fragile, and unreal our reality is.
