Subcortical Structures Are Essential to Consciousness
Many cognitive scientists ignore raw feelings completely, or claim either they aren't actually felt or r the cortex were insolent. But i also respect the work that lisa feldman barrett has done showing that complex human emotions involve learning and have a cultural component. It seems reasonable to use the word effect to describe the signal provided by the sub cortoral structures. Effect is a vital part of the survival value of consciousness. Without it, we would have motivation. And as anyone who has ever suffered depression can attest, you can't think your way out of that situation.
