In the early aughts where I met my wife, who was at the time living in another city. If you've ever seen the movie AI, there was an alternate reality game. The puzzles that they created as part of that were meant to be solved by community. And so there were 6,000 of us in a Yahoo group and a few hundred of those people in an IRC channel back in the day.
