Criminal Justice - The Concept of Motive

A big part of human criminal justice is about understanding an establishing motive, treating crimes differently based on what the motive was. How do you think about motive, the concept of motive, differently in a criminal justice context when the perpetrator of a crime is not human? It seems like you could think about them either as less complex than their human equivalents, and thus may be easier to under or more obscure.
