The imperial couple entered the bishop's residence and changed into their coronation clothes, a very old fashioned set of matching robes in red and white. Napoleon wore a golden laurel wreath, hearkening back to the crowns worn by victorious roman generals. Josephine wore a jewel encrusted tiara. By the time they were finally ready to enter notre dame, it was almost noon. The dignitaries inside had been ready and waiting in the crowded, cold cathedral for hours. Many of them didn't have seats. Pope pius believed this delay was deliberate directed at him, and he was quietly seething throughout the whole ceremony.
