CHAPTER

Dolly Reed's Life in Savannah, Georgia

Some sources describe Dolly Reed as free at this point and others say that she was enslaved by the Grest family but had been hired out to work in Savannah. Susie went to live with her grandmother around 1855 when she was seven and her grandmother immediately saw to it that she be taught how to read. Georgia's anti literacy law passed in 1829, both the person teaching and the person being taught could be fined and whipped. Although if the teacher was white, they could be jailed rather than whipped.
