The town of Plataea, on the Boetian slope of Mount Kitharon, was determined to retain her independence and hold aloof from Thebes. This would be the beginning of a long friendship between Athens and Plataea based on mutual interest. In any event, regardless of how the last few years of Hippies' reign came to an turbulent conclusion, Tyranny had many positive elements. A much desired political stability was achieved by conciliating the upper class through diplomacy, and by winning the Goodwill of the lower class through economic reform.
