Increasing the Gain on the Sensory Signals

Our brains modulate what we experience through paying attention. The brain is always figuring out which are the most important parts of the world and the body to represent in our experience. When you pay attention, you kind of increase the gain of these prediction errors. You turn up the volume on that part of the sensory world so that it has more effect on your perception. That's precisely what we do when we're sitting in a pub and having a chat. We're turning up the gain on that particular part of our sensory world relative to the rest of it. And that allows us to hear what's going on.
