Napoleon could certainly be self aggrandizing, but this was generally a trait he deployed strategically. He built up the small, inexperienced artillery branch of the army the alps into something formidable in a very short time. In recognition of the magnitude of the victory at toulon the convention handed out promotions to almost every soldier who distinguished himself during the siege.
