CHAPTER

What Is the Shodeshi Movement?

Bengal was partitioned in 1905, although this partition was eventually annulled in 1911. Part of the reason that the British wanted to divide Bengal was to weaken the growing nationalism there. The idea of a Muslim East Bengal and a Hindu West Bengal were sown at this time. A movement emerged very quickly in opposition to this partition, which was called the Shodeshi movement. And Tagore became part of this, yes. He wrote songs and poems in favour of Shodeshi - he led a big Shodeshi procession through Kolkata. But he wasn't in favour of the destruction of British factories.
