Agatha Christie is still the world's top selling author of all time. There are, of course, very interesting questions as to why that is. And one or two of those questions I've explored in some detail in the book you mentioned The Life of Crime. So if you look at it that way, it's been around forever. But there are other ways to look at it to say, well, no, in its current recognizable form, you can sort of see some kind of starting point.
