The Role of Footnotes in Craft Art and Activism

I want to talk a little bit more about the intersection of craft art and activism because you use footnotes in your novel. You rarely see it in fiction. And some of them cite American legal documents and some are fictional. One cites the 13th amendment, which states that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist within the U.S., except as a punishment for crime. So I wanted to ask you what your thinking was behind the footnotes and the role they play in the story.
