The other way that we decrease excitation is by blocking or modulating sodium channels. When you put a patient on two sodium channels together, it typically will cause more side effects like dizziness, double vision, ataxia, et cetera. The sodium channel blocking medications include phenitoen, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine and esli carbazepine. Lemotrigine is also a sodium channel blocking medication. And lecosamide is a special case. It decreases sodium channel activity, but not by directly blocking the opening of the voltage gated sodium channel.
