The Differences Between P-47 Thunderbolts and Mustangs

The P-47 had 850 caliber machine guns, which is a stunning amount of firepower for a single-engine aircraft. I heard multiple stories from veterans of coming back with cylinders knocked off their airplanes or the turbo supercharger hanging out the back and the plane getting back to base. The pilots love these airplanes because they would come back in amazingly shot up conditions and bring them back. Some guys wouldn't get out of the P-47s before it was too late.
