The History of Physics
Non-European astronomers did a huge amount of work without glass instruments. And that data then came across to Europe around the time, and before they had telescopes beginning with Galileo. When we got bigger and bigger glass telescopes, we were able to look in the sky and see fuzzy things. It took telescopes for us to be able to see that it was actually a galaxy like our own. So these are these clues that are being given to them along the way by looking at the universe.
