The Struggle for an Absolute Definition of Privacy

The idea that we're going to find an absolute definition for what privacy is is kind of a lost cause and is probably a bit of a waste of time. There is no overarching conception of privacy, it must be mapped out like terrain by painstakingly studying the landscape. The etymology of the word privacy actually comes from the Latin privatists, which means set apart from the public. For most people, this would have been a very physical thing, the physical space where you're separate from society.
