The people who weren't in the alliances lost out compared to the ones who were, according to evolutionary psychology. So choosing allies and signaling allegiance is a bigpart of what our ancestors had to do. Another big part was to impress each other. Other people would choose them as allies if they were impressed. And then they need to be a good judge of these things and other people who's impressive, who's loyal.
