The History of Universities in America
Universities began as two different things, the British system and the German system. In Germany you had this scientific research university that did teaching but it was primarily practical education. America basically took those things and just mashed them together. So our undergraduate education is very much British in that we emphasize a general education. We want to create well-rounded individuals. And then for the old German model where it's like we're training you for a research job.
