Investing in Open Source or Infrastructure?
Confluent is California, but Elastic started in the Netherlands as an example. So there are lots of ways to build really great big open source companies too. What I think has been taken for granted though is that monetization here is actually really, really hard. If a customer wanted to, they can download open source infrastructure and use it as infrastructure to power their entire company and never pay you a dime. That kind of differentiation and creating the monetization paths in open source is actually very, really difficult.
