The Bosporus was very strategically important, and that meant that Mehmet needed to secure it before he could conquer the city. The European side of Constantinople is mostly surrounded by water, which made it so hard to attack. Even with this enormous disparity in power, it was almost impossible for the Ottomans to conquer it because of how well-fortified Constantinople was.
