The first question I asked is, give me movies that fit the tone. Who's starring in this movie? Because that helps give me tone. A Will Ferrell movie, generally, if he's in doing comedy, is different than Ben and Adam Sandler comedy. So who's in this? And that really helped start to calibrate their brains of what they wanted this character to be.
