The Rise of the Independent Researcher

People are choosing settings outside of traditional academia to pursue lines of inquiry that previously would have found a home in universities. One really good structural reason is it's just getting a lot easier to access papers and other sort of serious materials you can participate in conversation. In AI, it's been interesting to watch certain people who don't have PhDs or, in some cases, undergraduate degrees become significant parts of their community.
