Banting, McLeod, and best started work in May of 1921. It did not go well at first as Banting struggled to improve his surgical technique. By the end of the second week, seven of their ten dogs had died. To resupply the animal cages, they resorted to buying dogs on the streets of Toronto for one to three dollars.
