What Is a Signal Chain?

A sound system is like a signal chain. On one end you've got a component designed to play back some form of media. And ultimately that electrical signal has to make its way to speakers. The whole chain from that component to the speakers, every part of that chain is important. Your experience typically is only as good as whatever the weakest link in that chain is able to manage.
