The History of Public Libraries in Britain
The development of true public libraries began in the early 17th century. The first free library was established in 1833 in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Andrew Carnegie single-handedly responsible for over 2,500 libraries around the world. Today, libraries are ubiquitous and can be found in almost every school at every grade level.
