China and the US Are in a Beauty Contest
China has been trying to promote its form of governance as being legitimate. It should be respected, even appreciated for some of the accomplishments that it's made. The effort to pursue China's national interests as they understand them isn't really so much to garner support and appreciation of foreigners. It's really about bolstering the party's position domestically. And if in the process of doing so, it means alienating key foreign partners then so be it.
