I think it's important to recognize the whole person and not just the work the person does for the organization. When you recognize things that people accomplish outside of work, it's a way for the leader in the organization to signal,. I see you, and I care about you much more than what you're bringing to the organization. Some people prefer more public recognition, some people prefer more private recognition.
