The word was coined in 1516 by Sir Thomas Moore when he wrote the little book utopia and it's a play on the ancient Greek. In ancient Greek utopia could either mean a no place but it could also mean a good place. And so what I want to do when I use the word utopia is really to push back at this pejorative sense of the word that it's somehow idealistic or impossible. We need utopian thinking in order to push us beyond where we kind of get stuck politically in the middle.
