When I taught first and second grade there was at the time for sure this belief among a lot of teachers that you didn't want to teach anything out of context because that lacked meaning so I would not have enjoyed doing these blending drills. A new study suggests that good skill in reading is actually what leads to long-term motivation rather than being motivated by it as we previously thought.
