The Legend of the Amazons

In the Iliad, Greek warrior Akiles withdraws from the war out of anger and frustration. He offers a prayer to Zeus to grant them victory against the Trojans. That phrase was rendered in later English translations variously as, bite the ground and bite the dust. The Amazons were a tribe of fierce female warriors who lived in the area between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Jeff Bezos named his online retail store Amazon after this earliest written reference to the Amazons.
