The Robustness Principle
The robustness principle dates back to the original t c p standards request for comment. It says, be conservative in what you do and liberal in what you accept from others. Netscape did this back in the day; every browser since has had to reproduce this behavior. This is both a fatal consequence of applying the rebustness principle and a natural reluctance to avoid it.
