I think for athletes doing higher volumes, you can do higher volumes of those smooth controlled intervals and get benefit from it. But I think for an athlete that's time limited, spending a little bit more time thinking about like VVO2 compared to lactate threshold could be helpful. Also consider adding float recoveries. So between these faster intervals, keep your pace or your effort slightly elevated,. kind of easy mod steady, which will optimize the aerobic demands of the whole session.
