How to Understand Media History
Gittleman argues that historical media doesn't just show us what people used to do, be like used. It also shows us how the historical media itself is constructing meaning. One of the examples she uses is black and white photographs. She says it's apparent for us how mediated things are when they're antiquated. And so one of her points is that we need to think of new media as socially embedded sites for the ongoing negotiation of meaning.
