What Is the Gate Theory?

When we get a massage, what's happening is your skin is being moved. That in turn stimulates the pressure receptors under your skin. When pressure receptors are stimulated, there's a message that goes to the brain and it specifically goes to the vagus. Once the vagus is stimulated, that basically slows down the nervous system. And when the nervous system is slowed down, fewer stress hormones are omitted. So this gate control theory doesn't explain everything about how pain works but it goes a long wa in helping us understand why we massage our temples when we have a headache or clutch our elbow after we bang it.
