I think it is possible to be liberal and sometimes I can't help using the word that way in the book. But with regard to political commitments like socialism or democracy, that identity functions as a qualifier on the meaning of democracy or socialism or nationalism. You can be a liberal in the sense of having a certain kind of generosity ... living with difference.
