Human beings grew up for 300,000 years in groups of 20 to 60 up to 150 people. That's what we're designed for and it means that it was much easier to deal with governance at that level because if somebody was slacking off you could just come down on them. But when we start getting to these macro tribes and clans and bands and things like that where we don't know each other the link is much much weaker. When I know everybody in an individual level, and you're all kin or kiss there's a very, very strong bond there. And so politicians constantly portray themselves as something truly dangerous and terrifying which exacerbates the fear of the other team. James Carville
